“I think I’m ready to tell my mother I’m with you.”
Queenie looked up from the steak she was eating, locking eyes with Shanice. They were at their new house in a Dallas suburb, eating dinner at the kitchen table. The food had Queenie in a mouth-watering food heaven until Shanice’s outburst. The confession had ruined her appetite.
“What’s wrong with keepin’ things the way they are? Don’t nobody gotta know what we do. We grown. We live our lives doin’ what makes us happy.”
“But I don’t want us to be a secret no more. I love you. My daughter loves you. I want us to be a family. Don’t you want that, too?”
Queenie sat her fork down, thinking on her response. If she told how she really felt, an argument would ensue. And if she lied, she wouldn’t be the goddess she claimed to be. “Shanice, I got love for you, but I think you movin’ too fast. Let’s enjoy each other’s company and see where that leads.”
The smile on Shanice’s face faded, the whites inside her eyes blazing red, her brows furrowing. “What the fuck is that s’posed to mean? I thought we was together. That’s what you said when I was bein’ yo’ nurse and tending the bullet wounds in yo’ back. Now that you out runnin’ the streets wit’ yo’ stripper bitches, you wanna change up?”
“C’mon, Shanice. It ain’t like that. We are together. I just–”
“You just like all the other niggas I fucked with. Lie to get what you want, and then after you had it, you don’t want it no more. You out all night and leavin’ me in the house with Shawntale. Why you move me here if you was always gon’ be gone? I don’t know nobody in Dallas. I moved here for you.”
“Stop puttin’ words in my mouth. I didn’t say I didn’t wanna be with you. All I said was you movin’ too fast. You talkin’ ‘bout a family and meetin’ yo’ momma and tellin’ her we together. That’s a lot.”
“We live together and we fuckin’. Don’t that make us family?”
Queenie was about to respond, but her phone rang. The caller name brought a pained look to her face.
Shanice crossed her arms over her chest, shooting daggers with her eyes. “I know you ain’t about to answer that.”
“It’s important. Hold on.” After pressing talk, she answered the call. “What?”
“You don’t sound grateful at all for me savin’ yo’ life,” a deep voice said.
“It ain’t you, man. Now just ain’t a good time. I’m goin’ through some shit wit’ my girl.”
“Trouble in paradise?” He laughed. “Well, I’m ‘bout to add to that, ‘cause I got a problem with you, too. We made a deal, and I don’t feel like you comin’ through on yo’ end. Yo’ ass would be dead or in jail if it wasn’t for me gettin’ you out that hospital. It’s been two months, and I still ain’t got what I want. Tell me somethin’, Queenie. Gimme a reason to feel like I shouldn’t start turnin’ up the heat.
